Mobile Phone System | Scientists Break Satellite Telephony Security Standards
February 9, 2012 – 6:30 amIn a few regions of the world typical unit phone information is still not available. In fight zones, building countries and on the high seas, heavenly body phones are used instead. Here, the write is related around air wave right away to a satellite. This passes the incoming call to a hire on the ground. From there, the call is fed in to the open write network. So far this method, with the ETSI’s encryption algorithms A5-GMR-1 and A5-GMR-2, was deliberate secure.
For their project, the interdisciplinary organisation of researchers from the areas of Embedded Security and System Security used commercially existing equipment, and incidentally choosen two at large used heavenly body phones. A elementary firmware refurbish was then installed from the provider’s website for any phone and the encryption resource reconstructed. Based on the analysis, the encryption of the GMR-1 typical demonstrated similarities to the one used in GSM, the many familiar mobile phone system. “Since the GSM encrypt had already been cracked, you were able to adopt the way and use it for our attack”, explained Benedikt Driessen, of the Chair for Embedded Security at the RUB. To authorize the results in practice, the investigate organisation recorded their own heavenly body write conversations and created a new assault formed on the analysis. “We were astounded by the complete insufficient of insurance measures, that would have complex our work drastically”, mentioned Carsten Willems of the Chair for System Security at the RUB.
Encryption algorithms are implemented to safeguard the privacy of the user. “Our results uncover that the use of heavenly body phones harbours dangers and the stream encryption algorithms are not sufficient”, emphasized Ralf Hund of the Chair for System Security at the RUB. There is, as yet, no substitute to the stream standards. Since users cannot rest on their safety against interception, identical to the safety of typical unit phones, they will have to wait for is to growth of new technologies and standards, or make use of other means of information for trusted calls.
